Paying for Your Treatment with UMR Insurance

If you are looking for alcohol rehab covered by UMR, you have plenty of options to choose from. With UMR insurance coverage, patients can receive rehabilitation services to overcome drug or alcohol abuse.

True Self Recovery is in-network with many plans offered by UMR. UMR may or may not authorize treatment for the full recommended length of stay at the residential treatment level of care. However, our clinical team will periodically submit updates to your provider in order to get more time approved.

Read on to learn more about how UMR insurance works for people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and what you can do to start your recovery process

Understanding Your Coverage with UMR Insurance

UMR, which stands for UnitedHealthcare Management Resources, is a third-party administrator that provides health and wellness services such as alcohol addiction and mental health services. UMR offers both preventive and curative healthcare coverage for its members, as well as access to a network of providers nationwide.

UMR offers a range of treatments and therapies for alcohol addiction rehabilitation. From medical detoxification to specialized therapy programs and aftercare, UMR covers an array of rehab services that are vital parts of any successful alcohol use recovery program.

Does UMR Insurance Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, UMR covers addiction treatment services for those who are suffering from alcohol addiction or drug-related problems. However, the extent of alcohol rehab covered by UMR or even the appropriateness of coverage varies, so it’s important to find a rehab facility that helps as much as possible.

At True Self Recovery, we will verify your insurance on your behalf and help you understand what is and is not covered by your UMR insurance plan. Just give us a call or submit our contact form to get started.

How Much Treatment Will UMR Cover for Alcohol Rehab?

Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are legally obligated to provide coverage for mental health services and substance abuse disorder treatments, including alcohol rehab services. Currently, insurance companies like UMR determine the type of care — inpatient or outpatient — covered for substance and alcohol abuse disorders.

Some UMR insurance plans only cover inpatient care, which refers to residential treatment where patients live at a facility to receive medical attention around the clock. Coverage for inpatient drug and alcohol rehab treatment may require a current diagnosis of drug dependence.

Under some UMR insurance plans, there is a small copayment along with coinsurance, which can sometimes be as low as 5%. Of course, this greatly varies depending on your plan. Other UMR plans may allow outpatient services, which refers to non-residential treatment programs where patients drive to and from a facility to receive treatment services such as counseling and group therapy.

True Self Recovery provides both inpatient and outpatient services, and we verify your coverage with UMR insurance on your behalf.

What Drug and Alcohol Rehab Services Are Covered by UMR Insurance?

UMR’s insurance may cover, at least partially, a variety of drug and alcohol rehab services, including detoxification, inpatient treatment, outpatient programs, counseling, aftercare services, and other support services.

Detoxification

UMR insurance covers detoxification services for those who are suffering from alcohol addiction or drug-related problems. Detoxification involves a medically supervised program that helps an individual get off of the substance they are abusing.

During this process, the patient is provided with medications to help curb cravings for drugs or alcohol and manage withdrawal issues, in addition to providing counseling to support their journey toward recovery.

Under UMR insurance, detox is typically covered for about 30 days of residential treatment. Inpatient care is generally covered under UMR’s insurance plan for up to 90 days. Outpatient treatment can also be covered for up to 60 days at a time.

The amount of coverage that any specific individual receives depends upon their plan and whether or not UMR considers each service medically necessary.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment, also referred to as residential treatment, is an intensive form of rehabilitative care for drug or alcohol addiction that involves 24/7 medical and therapeutic supervision. UMR’s insurance plan may cover inpatient treatment for up to 90 days at a time.

During inpatient treatment at True Self Recovery, patients have the opportunity to heal and develop essential life skills for reintegrating back into society without the use of alcohol or substances. This involves precious time away from environmental triggers so that patients can solely focus on their recovery and get started on their best path moving forward.

Outpatient Programs

UMR’s insurance plan generally provides coverage for up to 60 days of outpatient treatment. This type of treatment focuses on helping individuals learn how to handle the triggers that can lead to relapse while still allowing them to maintain their daily life outside of rehab. Outpatient programs may involve individual therapy sessions as well as group counseling sessions, depending on each person’s individual needs.

Counseling

Counseling is another important service covered by UMR’s insurance plans. Individuals may choose from a variety of counseling services including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and other approaches tailored to fit the unique complexities behind each person’s addiction issues.

Aftercare Services

After leaving rehab, UMR will provide coverage for aftercare services such as ongoing case management and support groups for up to one year following initial treatment. This can help individuals stay on track with their recovery goals by providing continued support from peers and professionals alike throughout the transition period when coming out of rehab and re-integrating back into society.

Other Support Services

In addition to providing coverage for traditional drug and alcohol rehab services, UMR also offers other support services such as medication management, family counseling, job readiness training, community outreach programs, financial guidance, housing assistance, and more depending on individual needs and preferences.

How to Verify Your UMR Insurance Coverage for Drug and Alcohol Rehab

UMR’s insurance verification process for alcohol rehab often requires that the patient is seen by a clinician or physician to confirm the diagnosis of an addiction issue. The clinician must then complete a medical necessity review and submit it along with the patient’s relevant medical records and documentation to UMR’s insurance specialists.

The insurance specialist will review the necessary documents, contact the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) to assess treatment history, and run any necessary certification screenings. Once this entire process is completed, UMR will authorize or deny coverage for the requested services.

Again, because insurance companies are legally obligated to provide coverage for substance abuse disorder treatments, you can count on some type of coverage.

How to Find the Best Drug and Alcohol Rehab Covered by UMR

Searching for a provider is an important step when looking for drug and alcohol rehab services. Before you begin your research, it’s important to understand your health insurance plan and the covered treatment options available. You can contact us at True Self Recovery and we can do this step for you.  We are in-network with UMR insurance.

For in-network providers, UMR usually covers the majority of expenses for treatment and rehabilitation services, including both inpatient and outpatient care. For out-of-network providers, UMR may partially cover some costs but there is often a higher deductible or copayment requirement.

You can also use online tools such as the UMR Provider Finder or call specialists from the insurance company to assist in finding potential providers in your area. Additionally, if you are connected with mental health professionals such as counselors or therapists, they may be able to suggest appropriate providers and services based on your individual needs.

What To Do If Your UMR Insurance Policy Does Not Cover Inpatient Rehab

Because insurance companies have a legal obligation to cover necessary substance abuse treatment services, there is a chance that inpatient rehab will be at least partially covered. However, if your Primary Care Physician does not deem the treatment medically necessary, UMR may deny coverage.

Patients should never delay treatment when services are not covered, as this can delay the recovery process. If your UMR insurance policy does not cover inpatient rehab, there are still a few options for treatment. Outpatient rehab services may be an option, as well as alternative forms of therapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
